Terremark Federal Group Certifies Cloud for Department of Defense Security Requirements

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Government cloud provider Terremark Federal Group (www.terremark.com) and its delivery partner URS Corporation’s IT business sector URS-Apptis (www.urs.com) announced on Thursday that its Enterprise Cloud: Federal Edition has been certified for compliance with Department of Defense security requirements. With this certification, Terremark Federal Group and URS-Apptis are certified to host a DoD application on Terremark’s IaaS offering.

The DoD Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process is intensive, according to the press release, and involves stringent requirements for all IT systems that operate on a DoD network.

Carpathia and Equinix launched their joint services in February to provide cloud solutions to federal organizations and are certified to provide hosting solutions to meet DIACAP requirements.

New Zealand Hosting Provider ICONZ Names New CEO

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — New Zealand web hosting provider ICONZ (www.iconz.net) announced on Friday it has named Roly Smoldon its new CEO, following the departure of former CEO Sean McDonald in June.

Smoldon joins ICONZ from security solutions provider MPA New Zealand, which distributes a range of networking and security products throughout New Zealand.

Initially joining MPA NZ as a new business development consultant in February 1999, Smoldon served as sales manager and enterprise director before finally being promoted to managing director in May 2009.

Google to Build Green Data Center in Dublin Opens Facility in Oklahoma

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Technology giant Google (www.google.com) announced on Friday it will build a new green data center in Dublin, Ireland, following its purchase of 11 acres of land and an existing building on Profile Park.

The company said it will invest about $101 million to complete the new data center, which will expand on its  existing Dublin data center space that is leased from a third party.

Once operational, the data center is expected to employ up to 30 people. Meanwhile, the construction project will generate about 200 jobs. The company has already hired contractors following a competitive bid process.

OpenSRS Launches Promotional Offers for Resellers

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Wholesale domain provider OpenSRS (www.opensrs.com) announced on Thursday afternoon the launch of OpenSRS Offers, its new service for resellers to share promotional offers with customers.

According to a post on the OpenSRS blog, these offers will help its resellers differentiate themselves from the competition and were designed to be used either as incentives for new customers or rewards for existing customers.

OpenSRS resellers can now offer Google AdWords credits to customers in the US and Canada at no cost. OpenSRS will provide its resellers with AdWords credit values of up to $100.

UK Web Host Adapt Announces 47 Million Investment by Lyceum Capital

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UK web hosting provider Adapt (www.adaptplc.com) announced on Thursday that growth investor Lyceum Capital (www.lyceumcapital.co.uk) has backed the company with a $47 million investment.

London-based Adapt provides enterprise-class cloud hosting, infrastructure management, network and data center services to a wide range of mid-market clients that operate IT applications, including LOVEFiLM and Last.fm.

The market for Adapt’s services is growing rapidly, as the managed hosting and cloud services sector is expected to grow at a rate of about 15 percent over the next five years.

NetApp Provides Cloud Storage for US Department of Energy Supercomputer

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Cloud storage solutions provider NetApp (www.netapp.com) announced on Wednesday that the US Department of Energy (www.energy.gov) has selected the company to provide the storage foundation for its Sequoia supercomputer.

Sequoia, which will be deployed in 2012 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, is expected to be one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, managing massive compute workloads where real-time analytics, scalable performance, and secure storage are mission critical, according to the press release.

LLNL is a DoE/National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory that is devoted to ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the nation’s aging nuclear deterrent without underground testing, along with nonproliferation, counterterrorism, energy security, and understanding climate change.
