Data Center Firm QTS Achieves Safe Harbor Status

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center provider QTS announced on Wednesday that it has been registered as Safe Harbor compliant. Enforced by the US Federal Trade Commission and Department of Transportation, Safe Harbor assures that QTS adheres to the highest levels of privacy protection set by the European Union.

This certification comes a couple weeks after QTS Atlanta Metro data center achieved LEED Gold Certification.

According to the press release, Safe Harbor status indicates that QTS meets the EU’s seven principles of privacy protection so customers can be assured that QTS’ interactions with EU companies that involve the transfer of EU personal data will not be hindered between the US and EU, where different privacy protections are in place.

Data Center Operator Infinity Names New Delivery Director

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UK data center operator Infinity announced on Wednesday it has named John Belton to head its delivery organization and manage Infinity’s $785 million capital program over the next three years.

The move comes a few weeks after Infinity announced it would expand its data center footprint with the acquisition of a new facility in Slough, UK.

Belton joins Infinity after 10 years at mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy Hurley Palmer Flatt where he served as executive director.

WikiLeaks Delays Launch of New Submission System Over SSL Security Concerns

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Whistleblower website WikiLeaks announced on Wednesday it has delayed its launch of the new submission system, originally set for Monday, in light of recent security concern related to the SSL infrastructure.

“Constructing the system is very complex,” said the organization in a statement. “Due to the deteriorating state of internet security which directly impacts the ability of sources to communicate with journalists and human rights activists securely, WikiLeaks has decided to postpone the launch initially scheduled for Monday.”

WikiLeaks said the new submission system is far more sophisticated than its predecessor.

Security Provider Symantec Says VeriSign Trust Seal Views Up 60 Percent from 2010

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Security firm Symantec announced on Tuesday that its VeriSign trust seals have been viewed by as many as 800 million people a day in 2011.

This news comes on the heels of Cyber Monday as online sales were up 33 percent from 2010, according to data released by IBM on Tuesday.

Symantec says views of its trust seals is up 60 percent from last year, and that 2011 marks the fifth consecutive year in which daily seal views have increased. Symantec claims that its seals are especially important to online consumers during the holiday shopping season.

Craigslist Silent as its Canadian Sites Inaccessible

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Canadian sites for online marketplace Craigslist are down, according to various reports on Tuesday.

While Craigslist has not made a public announcement yet, its website landing page cites “technical issues” as currently affecting Craigslist Canada “for many users.” Some sites are coming back online gradually, but not all functions are working yet.

This message appears to have replaced a more lengthty explanation that claims “the website formerly operating at this domain violated Craigslist’s Terms of Use and/or enabled or facilitated others in violating the TOU, and/or infringed Craigslist’s trademark(s) or other intellectual property.”

The offering comes more than a year after 8×8 acquired managed hosting and cloud services provider Central Host, where it adopted cloud-based services hosted out of three data centers in Silicon Valley and one data center in New York City.

The new solution offers businesses of all sizes on Windows-based networks a cost-effective and flexible hosting option that lets them instantly deploy cloud servers, virtual private servers, geographically aware DNS and full IPv6 support.
