(The Hosting News) – An integral group representing key players in the web hosting industry held a highly anticipated event on Capitol Hill Wednesday – attracting the attendance of top lawmakers including U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) along with U.S. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA).

Known as the i2Coalition, the group’s aim is to help maintain the web as an “environment of innovation” by weighing issues that affect the stability of web’s infrastructure.

During “Internet Education Day,” attendees had the chance to visit fifteen demonstration booths organized by providers including cPanel, Black Lotus, LeaseWeb USA, FireHost and more.

“By meeting with i2Coalition members, lawmakers had an opportunity to hear directly from the people who provide the platform that allows the Internet economy to thrive,” stated i2Coalition founding member Christian Dawson in a press release.

All lawmakers in attendance received a “Champion of Internet Innovation” award from the group.

One attendee in particular included cPanel VP of Operations Aaron Phillips who expressed excitement regarding the gathering. “The board knows that we can contribute to the education of important issues that impact hosting & Internet providers, while teaching our government officials about the inner workings of web hosting and how the Internet works,” Phillips noted via a statement.

Another tech superstar included Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit.com.

Internet advocates have increasingly rallied following last year’s protests against controversial anti-piracy acts including the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act. Champions of web freedom worried the laws would deter online innovation by holding providers liable for the actions of clientele.

(The Hosting News) - Two hosting partners of Jelastic Inc., provider of the ultra scalable and interoperable Java and PHP cloud hosting platform of the same name, have begun formally guaranteeing the performance of their tech support operations. The partners, dogado Internet GmBH of Germany and Layershift Limited of the U.K., have introduced Service Level Agreements (SLAs) guaranteeing prompt technical support response times. These policies represent a sharp improvement over the current status quo in the cloud hosting industry.

The partners´ commitments position Jelastic as the superior choice among hosting platform providers. “The need for tech support SLAs is one of the top demands we´ve been hearing from customers,” said Jelastic COO Dmitry Sotnikov. “We´re delighted to see our partners at the cutting edge of the hosting industry in offering such competitive policies.”

Dogado tech support packages come in Standard, Silver, Gold and Platinum versions. The respective versions promise maximum response times to technical issues of from 24 hours to two hours, depending on the severity of the issue and the contracted support level.

Layershift are challenging established cloud hosting industry norms by including their comprehensive SLA at no extra charge, offering full 24×7 support as standard for all ticket severities. The SLA includes a target response time of just 5 minutes for high severity issues, with penalties of up to 10% of the customer´s monthly fees provided if the maximum guaranteed times are not met.

Layershift´s tech support is not only timely, but also critically acclaimed by its customers, earning an impressive favorability rating of 9.7 out of 10 from support ticket ratings.

The tech support operations of both Jelastic partners significantly outperform those of other leading cloud hosting services. PaaS competitors such as Google App Engine, Heroku, and EngineYard charge up to $400 extra per month for their customers to enjoy similar support guarantees, whilst even email support (available for developers) costs extra at Amazon Web Services.

In perspective, the incumbent cloud hosting platforms advertise:

Amazon Web Services
- Even email support (available for developers) costs extra
- Phone support starts at $100 per month or 10 percent of the monthly fee
- Response times for businesses range from one hour to 15 minutes

EngineYard
- Free support during US business hours only, no SLA
- Premium support: $150 per month for 24×7 support, and SLA guaranteeing just 99.9% service availability

Google App Engine
- Bronze support: access to forums, plus billing support only
- Silver support: $150 per month, business hours only, with initial target response time of one business day
- Gold support: $400+ per month for 24×7 support, but outside business hours requires a phone call, and only for Priority 1 or Priority 2 requests. Initial target response time for P1 requests is one hour
- Platinum support: custom priced 24×7 support, but outside business hours still requires a phone call

Heroku
- Free support during “business hours” only, no SLA
- Quotes for paid support options available only upon request

CloudBees
- Target response time of two business days (silver) or four business hours (gold) for maximum-severity issues

(The Hosting News) – Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, today announced that Verne Global, a developer of power conscious data centre campuses, has selected Colt’s ftec data centre for an expansion of its 100 percent dual-sourced, renewable energy facility in Keflavik, Iceland. As more governments, private companies and public organisations look for ways to minimize their power consumption and carbon footprint, the additional Colt ftec data centre space will enable Verne Global to continue to meet increasing demand for more energy efficient, cost effective and environmentally sustainable data centre solutions.

Fabricated at Colt’s manufacturing facility in Northern England, the data centre modules will be shipped to Iceland in May and assembled onsite ready to go live in Q3.

“As cloud, mobile and big data applications drive organisations to look for cutting edge solutions for their data storage needs, interest in our Icelandic facility continues to gain momentum and we find ourselves needing to expand our current footprint,” said Jeff Monroe, CEO for Verne Global. “Our partnership with Colt allows for flexible and rapid expansion of our business with a superior product that meets our specific requirements.”

“By putting flexibility right at the heart of our data centres both in the design phase and throughout the life cycle, we achieve market-leading cost savings for customers in terms of energy efficiency and an unrivalled time to market of less than four months,” said Guy Ruddock, Vice President of Design and Delivery for Colt. “In the case of Verne Global’s campus, we’ve specifically customised our design to fully harness Iceland’s fresh air cooling which is available 365 days a year. This, coupled with the unique 100 percent renewable, dual sourced power supplying the data centre hall, provides industry leading efficiency and reliability.”

Ruddock adds: “In many respects, our approach can be likened to purchasing a new computer. Once we determine the user’s exact requirements, we build a tailored solution based on a combination of standardised architecture, proven modular components and options for dynamic scalability in terms of space, cooling and power requirements. The result is a data centre that matches or exceeds the durability and quality standards of a traditional build but is ready for work in a fraction of the time.”

Verne Global’s data centre campus is strategically located so its customers benefit from Iceland’s unique power sources of 100 percent geothermal and hydroelectric power. The Colt ftec data centre is built in a modular way with steel frame and the use of standardised, right-sized components minimises waste and makes the data centre layout as efficient as possible. The materials used in the data centre can be recycled at end of life.
