(The Hosting News) – If you didn’t think Amazon was close to challenging Microsoft in the cloud arena, think again. According to a Bloomberg.com report on Monday, the company’s Windows Azure topped $1 billion in annual sales, a first for the platform.

Windows Azure was made commercially available in early 2010.

The record news follows a recent unveiling by Microsoft in which the company more directly went after Amazon by unveiling its own IaaS offering – something Microsoft’s Bill Hilf earlier this month said “now makes it possible for customers to move applications into the cloud.”

And despite the growth by Microsoft, Amazon still dominates the cloud landscape. According to Forrester Research analyst James Staten, Amazon accounts for around 71% of the cloud market while Azure takes in just around 20%.

That doesn’t mean things won’t change, though. In Bloomberg’s report, Staten noted he expected revenue for Azure to “double annually” going forward – something that could see Microsoft representing as much as 35% of the cloud market in just one year’s time.

Surely Microsoft still has a lot of work to do with catching up to AWS – a platform that was launched almost four years before Azure.

(The Hosting News) – ServInt, a pioneering provider of managed cloud hosting for businesses worldwide, today announced it has begun offering guarantees on data center infrastructure, server uptime and customer support for all customers using its Jelastic auto-scaling cloud hosting platform.

Unlike service-level agreements (SLAs) offered by other cloud service providers, ServInt’s Jelastic SLA does not require customers to purchase additional hosting capacity.  Cloud service providers that require additional “availability zone” purchases effectively offset any compensation their customers might receive in the event of an outage.

Under the terms of the ServInt Jelastic SLA, ServInt guarantees that all data center infrastructure under its control will be available 100 percent of the time, and that the servers used to host its Jelastic customers will be available 99.9 percent of the time. Furthermore, ServInt offers a 100 percent availability guarantee for any ServInt infrastructure required to contact its technical support group.

“We are very proud to be one of the only hosting companies to offer the exact same service-level guarantees for our auto-scaling cloud as we do for our VPS and dedicated server offerings,” said ServInt COO Christian Dawson.  “Many of today’s auto-scaling service providers offer SLAs that are both underwhelming in the compensation they offer, and unfair in the additional cloud resources they require customers to purchase.”

Dawson concluded, “With ServInt’s 99.9996 percent historical uptime, we are able to not only offer our Jelastic customers the same SLA guarantees our VPS and dedicated customers enjoy – we are also able to make the SLA better for all our customers, regardless of platform.”
