Hewlett Packard Enterprise is getting out of the business of supplying bulk orders of stripped-down commodity servers to cloud giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Alibaba.
After seeing their server sales drop when cloud companies started ordering their custom computers directly from manufacturers in Asia, HPE (then HP) and Dell both introduced product lines for commodity gear to better compete in that space.

But competition has been tough. In March, HPE chief executive Meg Whitman said publicly that the company was feeling pain from “significantly lower demand” for servers just from one tier-1 service provider. Anonymous sources told Bloomberg that provider was Microsoft.
Speaking at an analyst event last week in San Francisco, Whitman said the company would no longer compete in the low-cost hardware business, focusing instead on higher-margin gear, such as high-end servers, hyper-converged infrastructure, storage, and networkingequipment, some of which it would continue selling to tier-1 cloud players, Fortunereported.

But all hyper-scale cloud operators have substantial hardware design operations of their own, and there’s no guarantee they won’t turn to the same Asian OEMs for the higher-end gear too. Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have been designing their own network switches,

Every year HostingCon offers educational sessions with industry leaders on the newest developments and critical developments in all things related to hosting and cloud computing. One of the main developments of the past year has been the continued roll out of the new top level domains. The new TLDs have been providing homes on the internet for the ever-growing population of websites, and providing opportunities for service providers. Registrars and their partner have faced challenges, including educating the public and businesses.

Early returns are encouraging, but not overwhelming, for both domain prices and adoption. Many of the most important new TLDs are currently going through the early release periods, like .irish and the controversial .sucks, while still many more will come online in the year ahead.

The rollout of new TLDs has also reflected some of the other industry trends, such as the quick shift of the market towards Asia as the world’s largest emerging markets come online. Radix beat out Amazon and Google to be the registrar for the hotly contested .store extension in February, continuing a fast rise Indian company’s rise to prominence.

New developments in domains, including new gTLDs but also internationalized domain names, have been embraced by Chinese businesses and consumers, while developed internet markets have consistently lagged in awareness. At the same time, .com continues not only to be the most popular extension, but also to rise significantly in price.

Last year the new domains were the focus of the “New TLDs: Good or Bad?” and “5 Insights About New gTLDs That Will Give Webhosts an Unfair Advantage” sessions. This year’s sessions will be announced soon, when we will find out what aspects of the domains businesses will be in focus at HostingCon Global 2015.
