Each year many hosting and cloud professionals attending HostingCon build a family vacation around the conference. San Diego is perfect for families. It has great weather, it is easy to get around on foot, by public transit, or by car, and it has a terrific selection of unique attractions which will actually be fun for both children and parents.

The first of the city’s attractions to mention for families is the San Diego Zoo. Since it’s already been covered in the blog, we’ll just review the basics. It is huge, and is considered one of the top zoos not just in America but in the world. It is about 4 miles from the HostingCon at the San Diego Convention Center, and the official hotel.

Also in San Diego is a museum dedicated to the mad genius behind Looney Tunes, Chuck Jones. While parents likely feel nostalgia for Bugs, Tweety, or another of Jones’ classic characters, even children who are less familiar with them can enjoy watching the latest Acme product backfire, and learn about cartooning.

Some kids will be interested in the USS Midway naval museum, some in LEGOLAND California, and there is also the New Children’s Museum, the amusement park at Belmont Park and the Birch Aquarium.

Add in a trip or two to San Diego’s beaches, and a food truck experience, and you’re sure to have a fun and memorable vacation for the whole family. Register today and bring everyone to San Diego for HostingCon Global 2015.

HostingCon Global 2015 is just over a month away, and there is a lot to get excited about for this year’s show in San Diego.

While the Gaslamp Quarter is a famous San Diego neighborhood literally down the street from HostingCon Global 2015, the Marina District hosts the industry-leading convention, and is a popular San Diego neighbourhood in its own right. The Marina District includes the San Diego Convention Center and the Marriott Marquis & Marina, but also includes a range of attractions and hideouts to enjoy while at HostingCon.

Within the Marina District is the Embarcadero, a strip along San Diego Bay where several of the city’s impressive museums are located, and several fine restaurants, including in the official hotel. The Embarcadero connects the Convention Center area with the second most famous area of the city (after the Gaslamp Quarter); Seaport Village.

Seaport Village is also considered part of the Marina District, and it will take you about 10 minutes by foot or a few minutes on the green transit line to get there. Practically right beside Seaport Village Station is the Kansas City Grill, where the bar scenes of Top Gun were filmed, with happy hour specials every day from 3:30 to 6:30. Seaport Village itself is a 14-acre waterfront complex encompassing miles of cobblestone and early 20th-century style waterfront lined with shopping, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

While San Diego has a lot to offer sightseers, shoppers, and networking professionals hungry and thirsty, most of it is concentrated near HostingCon. Most of the main attractions of the city are found either in the Gaslamp Quarter or the Marina District. This makes HostingCon a great opportunity to network, and also to discover a vibrant city, so register while the Early Bird discount still applies!

One of San Diego’s most famous attractions is the historic Gaslamp Quarter, which has been restored into an entertainment and night life hub. The Gaslamp Quarter is right down the street from the San Diego Convention Center, where HostingCon Global 2015 will be held, and the Marriot Marquis and Marina San Diego, the convention’s official hotel.

Because of the close proximity, it is likely that anyone attending the full conference, or planning on any evening networking, will be there at some point or other. Several establishments in the Gaslamp Quarter have already been mentioned in the HostingCon blog, but the area deserves its own run-down.

The Gaslamp Quarter is a historical site by any standard. Today it’s characterized by the culture of the modern San Diego. You know food culture is happening in San Diego, and brewing and sampling beer is big here, so finding 200 bars, restaurants, and music venues in a rectangle small enough to walk around stands to reason. Top-rated night spots include The Shout House, with its duelling pianos, and the speakeasy Prohibition.

The architecture and art life of the city are also represented, with attractions like the Chuck Jones gallery, which is stuffed with original Looney Tunes classics. The shopping is also renowned, so even if galleries aren’t your thing, and the sun hasn’t quite reached the yard-arm, the Gaslamp Quarter is where to be.

There will definitely be networking events, both official and unofficial, held in the Gaslamp Quarter. All the food and drink, music and art, history and shopping will be steps from HostingCon, and an added bonus to the world’s premier cloud and hosting conference.

As we approach HostingCon Global 2015 in San Diego at the end of July, the WHIR looks back at the years since the last HostingCon conference in San Diego in 2011. Since 2011, HostingCon Global has also been held in Boston, Austin and Miami, and in that time there’s been lots of change in the hosting industry.

San Diego’s unique hard-working, hard-playing culture helps make it a great location for HostingCon Global 2015. Part of that culture is the food and drink enjoyed in the city, and some aspects of that have already been touched on here in the blog. Another that deserves attention for busy executives who appreciate fine food, is San Diego’s thriving food truck scene.

There were close to 50 food trucks operating in the San Diego area, according to Roaming Hunger, about a year ago. There are 77 now listed on San Diego Food Trucks, which gives a list of where some of the best food trucks in San Diego are each day. It also has social media links for all 77. Social media may be the way to go, as relatively good location sites and apps like SD Food Truck Map still list less than half of all the city’s mobile restaurants.

San Diego is traditionally known for its Mexican food, but there is a wide variety, and San Diego Food Trucks lists the type of food for each. San Diego A List says Marisco’s German Taco Truck is the city’s best, and it represents a hybrid of the local tradition and the exotic.

HostingCon’s reputation may be mostly about bringing the industry’s leaders together to connect with and learn from each other, but it always involved a lot of fun, too. Who knows what deals will be made over the bratwurst tacos this year?
